St. Patrick´s Day
Ireland is the third-largest island in Europe. The capital city is Dublin.
The national flag of Ireland is green, white and orange. There grows lots of grass and the national plant of Ireland is the shamrock leaf, three-leaved clover.
Green is the Irish colour.
The patron saint of Ireland is Saint Patrick. He was born in the year 385 in Britain and died on March 17th around the year 460 in Ireland. He had an adventurous life. He was captured by pirates when he was 16 and then he was sold as a slave. Six years later he escaped and returned to Britain where he began studying for the priesthood, eventually becoming the catholic bishop. He returned to Ireland as to convert the Irish to Christianity.
St. Patrick´s day is celebrated around all the world by parades and festivals.
People wear green clothes, hats and shamrocks, funny costumes, eat green meals and
drink green drinks.
Leprechauns are tiny people dressed in green, collect pots of gold.
They hide them at the end of the rainbow. If you catch a leprechaun, he will lead you to
his pot of gold.
